This token of love has the central illustration drawn and neatly painted by hand directly on the sheet in water colour. The verse has been similarly executed using ink.
Before the 1850s it can be generally assumed the embossed name showing on the paper is the valentine maker.
After the 1850s many small shopkeepers and stationers as well as private individuals purchased their fancy-paper
from any of the well known makers and made up their own valentines.
